"Triumphant"

Joe Montana

Joe Montana’s championship story in San Francisco is inseparable from “The Catch.” On January 10, 1982, with the 49ers trailing Dallas late in the NFC Championship Game, Montana rolled right and delivered a pass to Dwight Clark at the back of the end zone. Clark’s soaring reception helped secure a 28-27 victory and sent San Francisco to its first Super Bowl. The play became one of the most celebrated moments in NFL history and a defining image of the 49ers’ rise.

In “Triumphant,” Justyn Farano brings that history into the portrait itself. Montana commands the foreground in San Francisco’s red and gold, while Clark reaches above the Dallas defense in the background and a second image captures Montana celebrating. The composition connects the quarterback with the moment and teammate who helped launch a championship era.

Hand-signed by Joe Montana and Dwight Clark, this Artist Proof edition also features Clark’s hand-drawn diagram of “The Catch,” adding a personal connection to the play from the receiver who made it.

The philosophy behind my art has always been to make the most compelling, engaging experience for you, the viewer. I try to envision what it was like to compete against that athlete on the field. I want you to feel that grit and rawness of emotion, the athlete’s competitive fire, and passion.

As a perfectionist, my obsession of getting these details precise, takes razor focus, constant critiquing, and fine tuning. It’s not till the painting is complete to my highest of standard, till I am genuinely satisfied.
