"Guardian Of Cincity"

Johnny Bench

Johnny Bench helped make Cincinnati’s Big Red Machine a standard of championship baseball. A two-time National League MVP, fourteen-time All-Star and ten-time Gold Glove winner, he combined the power of a middle-of-the-order hitter with the arm and instincts of an exceptional catcher. His career brought two World Series titles and a place in Cooperstown, but for Reds fans his legacy also lives in the authority he brought behind the plate. “Guardian Of CinCity” celebrates that complete player and his central place in a Cincinnati dynasty.

Justyn Farano pairs Bench’s defensive portrait with a home-plate tag against the Mets at Shea Stadium. That smaller scene gives the title its meaning, showing the confrontation between runner and catcher that helped define Bench’s reputation as a guardian of the plate. This artist recreation is hand-signed by Johnny Bench.

The philosophy behind my art has always been to make the most compelling, engaging experience for you, the viewer. I try to envision what it was like to compete against that athlete on the field. I want you to feel that grit and rawness of emotion, the athlete’s competitive fire, and passion.

As a perfectionist, my obsession of getting these details precise, takes razor focus, constant critiquing, and fine tuning. It’s not till the painting is complete to my highest of standard, till I am genuinely satisfied.
